Edmonton, AB, October 25, 2023 – The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) is pleased to announce Edmonton-based as Alberta’s Family Physician of the Year for 2023.

This highly esteemed award honours outstanding family physicians who best exemplify what being a family doctor is all about: providing exceptional care to their patients, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of their community and society in general, and dedicating themselves to the education of future generations of family doctors.

Dr. Korownyk was selected by her peers in recognition of her outstanding achievements as a family doctor, scholar, sought-after speaker, and recognized thought leader in family medicine.

“Dr. Tina Korownyk has accomplished so much for Family Medicine and is an aspirational role model for the profession. She has done many clinical roles in medicine and practiced in a medical home. Always humble and self-effacing, she has not pursued leadership, but it has found her often and she embraces the responsibility and excels in her roles,” notes her colleague and nominator Dr. Michael Allan.

He adds: “Recognizing Dr. Korownyk as the Physician of the Year will make sense and be applauded by the thousands of doctors that know her, allied professionals, and her patients, and bring attention to one of  the brightest stars we have had in recent memory.”

For almost 20 years, Dr. Korownyk has practiced family medicine in Edmonton at the Northeast Community Health Centre, which provides a range of health care services. She is the Director of the Patients, Experience, Evidence and Research (PEER) team, which seeks to empower primary care clinicians through best evidence, including the creation of primary care guidelines and the biweekly Tools for Practice articles, which features topics that are timely and consistently applicable to clinical practice. Dr. Korownyk joined the University of Alberta in 2006 and has recently assumed the role of Chair in the Department of Family Medicine. Passionate about improving the primary care landscape within the province of Alberta, she has published and presented on numerous primary care topics over the course of her career.
