Health Minister Hoffman Declares May 19th as Family Doctor Day in Alberta

Edmonton, AB, May 18, 2018 – At the sitting of the Alberta Legislative Assembly Thursday, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman officially declared May 19th as Family Doctor Day in Alberta.

The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) is proud to unite with global recognition of Family Doctor Day. First declared by WONCA (World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians) in 2010, this annual commemoration acknowledges the outstanding contributions of family doctors in health care systems around the world.

The event is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the central role family physicians have in the delivery of personal, comprehensive, and continuing health care. Their trusted relationships with their patients are developed and nurtured over period of time that can span a lifetime. World Family Doctor day shines a light on this unique trait of the family medicine specialty and celebrates the progress being made in family medicine and the special contributions of family doctors globally.

This year’s theme for World Family Doctor Day is Family doctors – leading the way to better health and is especially fitting for family doctors who play a pivotal role in health care transformation in Alberta. The landscape of the province’s health care system is changing, and primary care is the key to unlocking the whole system’s potential. Family physicians are leading the way, whether it be in a formal leadership role or from their local clinic and community.
